Most of us think of the health of our teeth when we think about dentistry, dental health and oral hygiene. But the teeth are supported by healthy gums!
Baltimore dentist Dr. Ed Lazer performs a thorough periodontal exam during routine preventive care visits and emphasizes the importance of maintaining gum health to keep the teeth strong and functioning well.
Gum disease affects approximately 75% of our population, with many unaware that they have it until more complex dental problems begin to surface as a result. Dr. Lazer encourages his patients to follow ADA recommendations, including two preventive care visits per year. These visits enable he and his staff to spot oral health issues such as gum disease in the early stages, when conservative treatment options are effective.
Early stage gum disease, known as gingivitis, may develop without causing symptoms that typically signal the presence of gum disease: bleeding gums, receding gums, sore and irritated gums. To treat gingivitis, Dr. Lazer may suggest a specific product to supplement at home oral hygiene or may recommend a scaling and root planing procedure to remove plaque build up in the deep pockets of the gums. Dr. Lazer may treat affected or diseased tissue with the Bident bipolar surgical device: this technology allows him to perform a variety of periodontal treatments with less pain and more accurate results. An alternative to laser dentistry, the Bident electrosurgical device to perform frenectomies, gingivectomies, and crown lengthening to address both dental health and cosmetic concerns.
For patients with advanced gum disease, Dr. Lazer may coordinate care with periodontist Dr. Rafat to restore gum health. Dr. Rafat is one of few area dentists with an educational and training background in both periodontics and prosthodontics.
Keep your gums healthy- they are an important part of your smile!
