A tooth filling is used to protect and add strength to a tooth that has been compromised by decay, wear or other damage. Owings Mills, MD dentist, Dr. Ed Lazer uses only tooth-colored dental fillings. Our dental fillings are durable, attractive and highly compatible. A composite tooth filling, also known as a “white filling”, bonds directly to the tooth and expands like a natural tooth, making it and less likely to cause cracks.

Do I need a tooth filling, an inlay or onlay?

Dr. Ed Lazer will complete an evaluation to determine what type of tooth filling is right for you. In most cases, a composite tooth filling is used for minor tooth decay or other damage. An inlay or onlay is used for more significant tooth decay, to replace large, old dental fillings, and in other cases that do not require a dental crown.

Composite Resin Tooth Filling

These dental fillings are made of a durable, biocompatible composite resin which comes in a range of tooth colored shades to match natural teeth perfectly. Although they will not last as long as other types of dental fillings, a composite tooth filling will last many years or more with proper care and maintenance.

A composite resin tooth filling is applied to the tooth by hand without the aid of molds or other templates. The resin is sculpted into place by Dr. Lazer at his Owings Mills, MD cosmetic dentistry office and cured with a special light. Resin fillings can usually be completed in a single visit.

In most cases, little or no existing tooth structure needs to be removed to install a composite resin tooth filling compared to gold, porcelain or amalgam (silver) fillings, preserving more of the natural tooth.

Replacing Metal Dental Fillings

Many patients with a traditional amalgam filling (metal filling) are choosing to replace their tooth filling with a comfortable and attractive cosmetic tooth filling. Some patients have sensitivity to metal in their mouth and report having a metallic taste or discomfort because of their metal dental filling. Dr. Lazer can remove your metal dental filling and replace it with either a composite resin dental filling or a porcelain inlay or onlay. Replacing old fillings can not only improve the integrity of your dental health, but provide an instant smile makeover.
