What is Virtual Dentistry?

Though many dental offices are able to offer regular dental services again, certain members of the population are still at high risk for COVID-19. At Cosmetic and Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Ed Lazer offers virtual dentistry for patients that don’t want to risk coming into the office yet. Virtual dentistry is helpful for multiple other situations as well. Dr. Lazer, a Baltimore dentist, explains virtual dentistry and its benefits.dentist in baltimore, maryland

What is Virtual Dentistry?

Virtual dentistry is also called teledentistry. A virtual dentistry appointment is similar to a FaceTime call. You can talk to your dentist about your concerns via video on your cell phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. We utilize doxy.me software to make sure that everything is confidential and HIPAA-compliant, so you can speak freely about your dental concerns and desires.

About the Doxy.me Software

Doxy.me makes it easy for you to have a safe and secure virtual dentistry appointment. You don’t have to download any software or make an account just to have an appointment. Their network is HIPAA-compliant and the video connection is encrypted. None of your personal data is saved once the call is over and doxy.me is free to use.

The Teledentistry Process

To schedule a virtual dentistry appointment, you can go to our online scheduling tool and select a virtual consult from the dropdown. We’ll get in touch with you by phone or email to confirm a date and time for your appointment. Before the appointment, you’ll be sent a video link. When you click this, it’ll take you into a virtual waiting room until your dentist enters as well.

While there’s no fee for using the doxy.me software, a consult fee is charged for the dentist’s service, since this is similar to an in-person appointment. We can send the fee through your insurance to see if it’s approved. Once the dentist enters your appointment, you simply talk to them about any concerns or things you’d like to change with your teeth like you would in the office!

Who is Virtual Dentistry For?

Technically, virtual dentistry can be for anyone. During this time, we know that people that are older or immunocompromised may not want to go into the office. They can talk to their dentist about issues they’re having without needing to leave their home. It’s also convenient if you’re already sick with a cold or flu and don’t want to transmit it to other people.

Teledentistry is convenient for people with busy schedules or work hours that make it difficult to schedule an extra appointment where they have to go into the office. They can discuss concerns they have or the cosmetic procedures they want to get. The dentist can then help them determine if coming into the office is necessary.
