Why Choose the Dentist for Botox?
The field of dentistry has recently embraced the use of Botox® and dermal fillers such as Juvederm as a part of their services. As a dentist, Dr. Lazer has an in-depth knowledge of the muscles, nerves, and structure of the face and neck. This enables him to strategically place the injections for the best possible outcome. An outcome that is natural-looking and comfortable.
Patients also enjoy the added convenience of receiving touch-up treatments a couple of times a year as needed during routine dental care visits. Dr. Lazer can monitor the effects of your treatments and make recommendations for maintaining your results over time.
Botox & Dermal Fillers: What to Expect
Dr. Lazer meets with patients to thoroughly assess their skin condition and health cosmetic goals and discuss expected results. Placing Botox and dermal filler injections is a relatively simple process for our doctors. Dr. Lazer gently places the injections beneath the skin surface using a micro-needle. With the local anesthetic numbing the face, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the process.
Once complete, you can resume your daily activities, and the anesthetic wears off. Minor redness, tenderness, and swelling at the injection site are common and typically dissipate in the first 24 hours. Results will begin to be noticeable after a couple of days. You can expect a gradual change and improvement in the treated area over the first couple of weeks following treatment.*
How Does Botox Work?
Botox helps add volume and smooth fine lines and wrinkles on the face. This treatment is beneficial for reducing frown lines by relaxing the underlying muscles. Over time, natural facial expressions can create more “permanent” lines where we frown, smile, or squint. This is partially due to over-contracted muscles.
However, all of these muscles can relax after a Botox injection. Botox works by blocking nerve impulses from being sent to the muscles. This prevents wrinkles from forming on the skin because it weakens or paralyzes muscles that contract and make wrinkles form.
Botox treatment can address crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, bunny lines, lipstick lines, marionette lines, and other dynamic wrinkles. Smiling, furrowing the brow, or squinting can cause these dynamic wrinkles.
How Do Dermal Fillers Work?
Dermal fillers restore lost volume beneath the skin to fill in wrinkles and other facial lines. Dermal fillers consist of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance we find in the human body. We lose elasticity and volume as our natural collagen production decreases as we age. Certain medications, lifestyle habits, and environmental exposure can also lead to volume loss in the face.
By injecting dermal fillers, we give a “boost” to existing collagen and stimulate your natural collagen production to improve skin tone. Dermal fillers immediately start to swell up and plump the skin. The result is a fuller, smoother look.
You should see a difference from fillers directly after treatment. However, these are not your final results. It will take about two weeks to see the final results from your dermal fillers.
Facial Treatment FAQs
Read below as we answer common questions about Botox and fillers:
How long do Botox or dermal fillers last?
Botox can last for 3-6 months*, depending on the area treated and the overall condition of your skin. Dermal fillers can last longer, with some patients maintaining their results for up to 18 months*. If you want to extend the results, Dr. Lazer will recommend touch-up treatment visits at his Baltimore office.
Am I a candidate for Botox or a dermal filler?
Most patients are candidates for these facial esthetic treatments. Dr. Lazer will discuss your medical history and goals before placing any injections to ensure your health and safety.
What not to do after getting dermal fillers?
After getting dermal fillers, patients should avoid exposing the area to very hot or cold temperatures, excessive pressure, strenuous exercise, alcohol, and smoking. It is key to avoid doing certain things that could cause complications or make the filler less effective. These include:
- Going into hot environments can cause dehydration and increase swelling.
- Doing anything that causes bruising or trauma to the area where the doctor injected the dermal fillers.
- Smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol can thin the blood and affect healing time.
What is the 4-hour rule after Botox?
For 4 hours following your Botox treatment, you should not lie down, touch or rub your face, or rest your face on a pillow or chair. This rule ensures that the Botox injection is even distributed throughout the face. Staying upright 4 to 6 hours after Botox is essential so that the injections do not shift.
Can dermal fillers be dissolved?
We can remove dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane made from hyaluronic acid. We inject hyaluronidase enzyme into where the fillers were previously injected. Like hyaluronic acid, hyaluronidase is a naturally occurring enzyme found in the body. This enzyme can metabolize the filler so it disappears.
Can I wash my face after dermal fillers?
After getting dermal fillers, you must avoid touching your face for at least 6 hours after your procedure. You can use a gentle cleanser or moisturizer, but you should do this carefully and in moderation.
