Performed in the comfort of our Owings Mills, MD dentist office, a root canal is generally no more painful than a tooth filling. Most patients are relieved of their tooth pain once the root canal procedure is in progress as the infected tissue is removed. The infection of the canal is what causes tooth pain, not the root canal procedure. A root canal is a conservative treatment that allows you to keep your natural tooth structure which is preferable to the alternative – tooth extraction.

What is a Root Canal?

The term “root canal” actually refers to the natural cavity at the center of the tooth. Inside the root canal is soft tissue called pulp and the tooth’s nerve. Bacteria or debris can enter this area and cause an infection or in extreme cases, an abscess. An abscessed tooth is very serious and should be treated immediately as the infection can spread to other parts of the body. If you believe you have an abscessed tooth, contact Dr. Aurelia Vanderburg, an Owings Mills, MD endodontist, immediately. Dr. Vanderburg is a specialist in root canal procedures. Her gentle touch and use of advanced technology ensures that your dental treatments are pain-free.

About the Root Canal Procedure

Root canal therapy usually requires multiple visits to our Owings Mills, MD dentist office. First, we will take diagnostic x-rays to evaluate the tooth and root canal, looking for signs of infection in surrounding areas. Dr. Vanderburg will discuss the procedure with you and explain what will happen during and after the treatment.

To begin the procedure, you will be given a form of anesthesia to make you more calm and relaxed. Dr. Vanderburg will drill a small hole into the tooth to access the infected tissue and remove the damaged nerve and any debris inside the tooth. Removing the infected pulp will relieve any pressure caused by the infected tooth. She will then thoroughly clean the tooth and get rid of any excess material and fill it with a biologically-inert substance to prevent further decay.

To strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy, Dr. Vanderburg often recommends the placement of a dental crown to help support the structure of your tooth. Custom fit and color matched to your natural teeth, a dental crown fits around the tooth like a cap and will support the long term health of your tooth.
