A lot of people avoid the dentist because they aren’t sure what to expect. Or maybe they’re worried it’ll hurt. Or they’re embarrassed about how long it’s been. But a routine teeth cleaning isn’t scary. It’s not painful. And once you know exactly what’s going to happen, you’ll feel a lot more comfortable walking through our door.
So let’s walk through it together, step by step.

Step 1: The Welcome
You’ll check in with our front desk team. Grab a seat, maybe flip through a magazine, and before you know it, one of our hygienists will call your name.
Step 2: The Chat
Your hygienist will walk you back to a treatment room and ask how you’ve been doing. Any new aches or sensitivity? Any changes in your health or medications? This conversation matters. It helps us know what to look for.
Step 3: The Exam
Before the cleaning starts, Dr. Lazer or Dr. Doroshenko will pop in for a quick look. They’ll check for anything obvious: cavities, worn spots, gum issues. This only takes a minute or two. Then they’ll step out and let the hygienist do their thing.
Step 4: The Tartar Scraping
Here’s where the actual cleaning happens. Your hygienist will use a small metal tool called a scaler to scrape off plaque and tartar, especially along your gumline and between your teeth.
You might hear a scraping sound. That’s totally normal. If you have a lot of buildup, it might take a few minutes. But it shouldn’t hurt. If you feel any discomfort, just raise your hand. We’ll slow down or adjust.
Step 5: The Polishing
Once your teeth are clean and smooth, your hygienist will use a high-speed brush with a little rubber cup on the end. It spins and makes a buzzing sound. They’ll spread a gritty toothpaste-like polish across each tooth. It tastes kind of minty and leaves your teeth feeling super smooth.
Step 6: The Floss
Yes, we floss for you. Your hygienist will get deep between each tooth to remove any leftover polish or plaque. This is also when they’ll notice if any spots bleed easily, which can be a sign of early gum inflammation.
Step 7: The Rinse and Fluoride
You’ll swish and spit. Then your hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment, either a gel in a tray or a quick paint-on varnish. It takes about a minute and helps strengthen your enamel.
Step 8: The Wrap-Up
Dr. Lazer or Dr. Doroshenko will come back for one last look. They’ll review anything the hygienist found, answer your questions, and let you know when to come back. Most patients are good for six months.
Does It Hurt?
For most people, no. You might feel a little sensitivity, especially if you have receding gums or it’s been a while. But our hygienists are gentle. We offer warm towels, ceiling TVs with headphones, and a team that genuinely cares about your comfort.
