What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown is a custom-made “cap” that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns restore a tooth’s original shape, size, and strength while blending seamlessly with your natural smile.

When might you need a crown?

  • After a root canal to protect the weakened tooth
  • To repair a large cavity that’s too big for a filling
  • To cover a cracked, fractured, or worn-down tooth
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth

Crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. They’re all strong, natural-looking materials that Dr. Lazer and Dr. Doroshenko custom-match to your surrounding teeth.

Your Same-Day Crown Journey: One Visit, Lasting Results

Step 1: Consultation & Digital Examination

Your visit begins with a thorough exam in our Owings Mills cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Lazer or Dr. Doroshenko will examine the tooth, take digital X-rays, and discuss your goals. Using our intraoral camera, we’ll show you exactly what’s happening with your tooth on a chairside screen so you understand the problem and the solution.

If a crown is the right choice, we move immediately to preparation. You don’t have to wait for a second appointment.

Step 2: Gentle Tooth Preparation

We numb the area so you’re completely comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, we gently remove any decay and shape the tooth to create space for your new crown. Because we use electric handpieces (quieter and more precise than traditional drills), most patients find this step surprisingly easy.

Step 3: Digital Impressions

Instead of uncomfortable traditional impressions, we use an intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your prepared tooth. The wand is small and comfortable, and within minutes, we have a perfect digital model. Anxious patients and those with a strong gag reflex love this step.

Step 4: Design Your Crown on Screen

Here’s the really cool part. Using CEREC software, we design your crown right in front of you on a screen. You can see exactly what your new crown will look like before we even make it. Dr. Lazer’s advanced cosmetic training from the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies ensures your crown is functional and beautiful.

Step 5: Milled Right Here, Right Now

We send your digital design to our in-office milling unit. A solid block of high-quality ceramic is carved into your custom crown in about 15-20 minutes. While you relax with satellite TV and wireless headphones, your crown is being crafted steps away.

Step 6: Placement & Polishing

Once your crown is milled, Dr. Lazer checks the fit, color, and bite. He makes any minor adjustments, then bonds the crown permanently to your tooth using strong dental cement. After a final polish, your crown is indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, like brushing twice daily, flossing, and regular checkups, crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer. Some patients keep their crowns for decades. We use high-quality materials and precise fitting techniques to maximize its lifespan.

Does getting a crown hurt?

No. We use local anesthesia during preparation, so that you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Afterward, you might experience mild sensitivity, especially to hot or cold, for a few days. This is normal and fades quickly.

Can a tooth with a crown still get a cavity?

Yes. The crown itself won’t decay, but the natural tooth underneath can. If plaque builds up, decay starts at the margin where the crown meets the tooth. Regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings prevent this.

What if my crown falls off or feels loose?

It’s rare with proper care, but it can happen. If your crown loosens or falls off, call us immediately. Save the crown and bring it with you. We can re-cement it if the tooth and crown are still in good condition.

Will my crown look natural?

Absolutely. We custom-match the shade, shape, and translucency to your surrounding teeth. Dr. Lazer’s cosmetic training ensures your crown blends seamlessly. Most people won’t be able to tell which tooth is crowned.

Is CEREC as strong as a traditional lab crown?

Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-quality ceramic that are as strong as, or stronger than, traditional lab-fabricated crowns. We offer a 5-year guarantee on our crowns for your peace of mind.

Does insurance cover crowns?

Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown treatment, typically 50% after your deductible. We’ll verify your benefits before treatment and provide a clear cost estimate. We also offer financing options through CareCredit.

How much do same-day crowns cost?

Cost varies based on the tooth’s location, the material chosen, and any additional procedures needed (like a root canal). During your consultation, we’ll provide a complete, itemized treatment plan with all costs explained upfront. Ask about our current specials!
