What Is a Dental Crown?

Think of a dental crown as a custom-made cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns restore a tooth’s original shape, size, and strength while blending seamlessly with your natural smile.

You might need a crown:

  • After a root canal to protect the weakened tooth
  • To repair a large cavity that’s too big for a filling
  • To cover a cracked, fractured, or worn-down tooth
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To improve the appearance of a discolored or misshapen tooth

Crowns are typically made from porcelain, ceramic, or zirconia. Our doctors custom-match them to your surrounding teeth.

Your Same-Day Crown Journey: One Visit, Lasting Results

Step 1: Consultation & Digital Examination

Your visit begins with a thorough exam. Dr. Lazer or Dr. Doroshenko will examine the tooth, take digital X-rays, and discuss your goals. Using our intraoral camera, we’ll show you exactly what’s happening with your tooth on a chairside screen.

If a crown is the right choice, we move immediately to preparation. This means you don’t have to wait for a second appointment.

Step 2: Gentle Tooth Preparation

We numb the area to keep you completely comfortable. Then, we gently remove any decay and shape the tooth to create space for your new crown. Our electric handpieces are quieter and more precise than traditional drills.

Step 3: Digital Impressions

Instead of uncomfortable traditional impressions, we use an intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D image of your prepared tooth. The wand is small and comfortable, and we have a perfect digital model within minutes.

Step 4: Design Your Crown on Screen

Using CEREC software, we design your crown right in front of you. You can see exactly what your new crown will look like before it’s even made. Dr. Lazer’s advanced cosmetic training from the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies ensures your crown is beautiful and works from the start.

Step 5: Milled Right Here, Right Now

We send your digital design to our in-office milling unit. A solid block of high-quality ceramic is carved into your custom crown in about 15-20 minutes. While you relax with TV and wireless headphones, your crown is being crafted steps away.

Step 6: Placement & Polishing

Once your crown is milled, Dr. Lazer checks the fit, color, and bite. He makes any necessary minor adjustments, then permanently bonds the crown to your tooth. After a final polish, your crown is indistinguishable from your natural teeth. You will leave with a fully restored smile in a single visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you know all there is to know about dental crowns? Dr. Ed Lazer and Dr. Andrey Doroshenko are here to provide you with all you need to know to make an informed decision.

Is a dental crown painful?

The dental crown procedure should not cause you severe pain. We will first administer a local anesthetic so you won’t feel any discomfort during the procedure. Most people say that it feels like they are getting a tooth filling.

After the procedure, your tooth may feel sensitive. However, this will pass in a few days. Please contact our Towson-area dental office if the sensitivity lasts longer than two weeks.

Can a dental crown last forever?

Yes, your crown can last a lifetime. However, this entirely depends on how well you take care of it and on your oral health. Most crowns will last between 10 and 30 years.

If you commit to a lifetime of proper oral hygiene, then there’s a chance that the crown could last 30-plus years!

What should I do if my dental crown falls out?

Call our office as soon as you can if your crown falls out. There is a good chance that Dr. Lazer or Dr. Doroshenko can re-cement it into place. However, your dentist may need to provide you with a whole new crown if it has too much damage. You should also protect the tooth.

The underlying tooth structure is now exposed, including some sensitive parts. We recommend cleaning the tooth with water and refraining from using it until we can reinsert the crown.

How long does a crown last compared to a filling?

Crowns typically last longer than fillings, with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years or more, depending on care. On the other hand, fillings usually last 5 to 15 years, depending on the material and placement. Crowns are more durable because they cover and protect the entire tooth, making them better for extensive damage.

Can a crowned tooth still get cavities?

Yes, a crowned tooth can still get cavities, especially at the margin where the crown meets the natural tooth. Bacteria can accumulate in this area if you don’t always brush and floss twice a day. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups protect crowned teeth from decay.

How much of a tooth needs to be left for a crown?

A tooth needs enough structure above the gumline to support a crown securely. If much of the tooth is missing because of decay or damage, we may need to build it up with a core or post before placing the crown. The remaining structure must be strong enough to ensure long-term strength.
